Clinical significance
Plasminogen is activated by conversion to plasmin which has the essential role of solubilizing fibrin and also of degrading fibrinogen. This test is useful: - in patients with plasminogen deficiency, both quantitative (Type I) and qualitative (Type II), which is a pre-disposing factor towards thrombosis, especially when combined with other risk factors. - for monitoring treatment with fibrinolytic drugs which will be ineffective if plasminogen levels are very low. - Plasminogen levels are routinely low in new-born especially premature babies.
