Clinical significance
This tool kit uses as polysaccharides from 23 pneumococcal serotypes of the vaccine Pneumovax as antigens. This test is indicated in patients with repeated bacterial infections to identify a deficit in production of anti-polysaccharide antibodies. The usual response expected should reveal levels of anti-pneumococcal antibody after immunisation with Pneumovax at least 3 times higher than the levels measured prior to vaccination. (Schutz, J Clin Immunol, 2013) Outside of this case, there is no recognised standard for protective levels as more than 90 identified serotypes exist and immune response is heterogeneous from one individual to another. In a non-vaccinated population of adults and children aged over 12, the average values usually found are approximately 50 mg/L (Chua, J Allergy Clin Immunol, 2011) NB: This test must not be used to diagnose an acute infection, which will be done by bacteriological testing of the microorganism.
