Clinical significance
Dramatic decreases in haptoglobin levels are seen in intravascular hemolysis. Minor hemolysis in the tissues does not entail significant decreases but, if it is extensive, there is always an intravascular component and therefore haptoglobin levels fall. Concomitant inflammation (signaled by increased levels of orosomucoid) tends to compensate for any hemolysis-related decreases in haptoglobin which therefore can remain at more or less normal levels.
