Clinical significance

BNP and NT pro BNP are heart failure markers. These markers are useful in differentiating between heart failure and respiratory disease in a patient suffering from dyspnoea.NT-pro-BNP is an inactive part resulting from the cleavage of the precursor of BNP, pro-BNP. NT-Pro-BNP is a very good reflection of the BNP concentration, which implies that these two molecules have the same clinical significance. However, Pro-BNP appears to display less within-subject variations, particularly age, sex and renal function (however, it increases in cases of renal insufficiency). With a longer half-life of NT-Pro-BNP (60 to 120 min as opposed to 20 min for BNP), the NT-Pro-BNP concentrations under assay are higher. Finally, NT-Pro-BNP is more stable than BNP and does not require freezing of the sample, unlike BNP.The recommended indications of this assay are the following : - Left Ventricle Failure (LVF) diagnosis, - Left Ventricle Failure (LVF) prognostic evaluation, - Myocardial function evaluation after Infarction (MI), - Angiotensin Converting Enzyme Inhibitor treatment follow-up.
