Clinical significance
Anti prothrombin antibodies form part of the anti phospholipid antibody family, that are directed against phospholipids and protein co-factors such as prothrombin. The relation between these antibodies and thromboembolic complications (anti phospholipids syndromes) is not clearly established. These antibodies have been reported as a predictive marker of myocardial infarctions in middle aged men. The anti prothrombin antibodies have been described in various clinical contexts in infection and auto immunity. Some authors have indicated them in haemorrhagic manifestations: anti prothrombin antibodies provoke a transitory deficit in prothrombin by binding to it and accelerating the purification of antigen-antibody complexes. Two thirds of circulating antibodies have an antiprothrombin activity. Approximately 20 - 30% of lupus cases show prothrombin IgG. The predicative value for the thrombosis of antiprothrombin antibodies remain to be discussed.
