Clinical significance

Chlamydia can infect a wide range of different animals including humans, in whom the clinical picture is highly variable. Psittacosis is transmitted by psittacine birds and is a serious disease with respiratory and systemic symptoms, and septicemia. Ornithosis is transmitted by pigeons - and perhaps other birds and domestic mammals - and causes atypical pneumonia which is usually self-limited. Diagnosis relies on serological analysis, ideally evidence of seroconversion or the detection of specific IgM antibodies.
