Clinical significance
The conversion of prothrombin into active thrombin entails the production of cleavage fragments which can be assayed to give a measure of the overall amount of thrombin being generated. This test is useful in the diagnosis of disorders involving overactive coagulation mechanisms and thromboembolism. High readings are obtained in patients with thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, diffuse intravascular coagulation, multiple trauma and septicemia. The levels of these fragments may also be increased in patients with Protein C or Protein S deficiency. The level of these fragments 1 and 2 can be significantly reduced in patients on anticoagulant therapy.
