Clinical significance
A genus of the family Enterobacteriaceae which includes the species S. enteritidis. Different varieties of this species have adapted to various warm-blooded animals; certain serotypes only infect humans (S. typhi and S. enteriditis paratyphi A), others only certain animals (S. enteriditis gallinarum-pullorum) and others are promiscuous (S. enteriditis typhimurium). The Typhi and Paratyphi A, B and C serotypes are responsible for typhoid and paratyphoid fever and other serotypes are common causes of food poisoning. Infection in all cases is via the digestive tract. Bacteriological diagnosis involves isolating the bacterium from a blood or a stool culture followed by serotyping (with drastic preventative measures called for in the case of certain serotypes). Serological analysis is based on the classic Widal's serum test for the presence of agglutinins to the O and H antigens carried by S. typhi and S. paratyphi A, B and C. If warranted in the light of the epidemiologic situation, other "minor" serotypes, may be included. The presence of low or moderate titers of antibodies specific to the H antigen of Typhi or Paratyphi A or B is suggestive of prior immunization.
