Clinic significance
Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) sulfate is derived from DHEA and secreted by the adrenal cortex. One of the 17-oxosteroids high levels are associated with precocious puberty and adrenal hyperplasia secondary to 11-hydroxylase deficiency. Its levels are reduced in retarded puberty and adrenal insufficiency. DHEA sulfate production is not stimulated in the short Synacthen (adrenocortical stimulation) test.
