Clinical significance
Superoxide dismutase catalyzes the conversion of superoxide anions to hydrogen peroxide. Measuring the levels of this enzyme is important in the evaluation of oxidative balance in patients at risk as a result of nutritional imbalance (e.g. diabetics) or poisoning. The level of this enzyme is also reduced in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
