Clinical significance
Testosterone-Estradiol Binding Globulin (TEBG, or Sex Steroid Binding Globulin) is a plasma protein which transports the sex steroids testosterone, DHT and estradiol in the blood. Serum levels are increased during pregnancy, in women taking estrogens, and in men over the age of 50. Levels can also rise as a result of hyperthyroidism, cirrhosis of the liver and in response to certain drugs (tamoxifen and phenytoin). Levels are reduced in hyperandrogenism, obesity, hyperprolactinemia, after menopause and in response to treatment with androgens or corticosteroids.
