Clinical significance

Synthesized by TSH-stimulated thyroid gland follicular cells, thyroglobulin plays an essential role in the biosynthesis, storage and secretion of the thyroid hormones (triiodothyronine and thyroxine). Thyroglobulin is an early marker for metastasis of differentiated carcinoma of the thyroid gland following complete thyroidectomy.
