Clinical significance

Toscana virus belongs to the phlebovirus genus, transmitted by sandflies. Toscana virus infections occur during the summer season in the Mediterranean basin (southern France, Italy, Portugal and Spain). These infections can be asymptomatic, leading to a mild flu-like illness, or cause neurological complications (meningitis and meningoencephalitis). Diagnosis is based on PCR testing for the Toscana virus genome in serum or plasma within 7 days of the onset of symptoms, and in CSF if there are neurological signs. A serology test may be carried out from the 5th day after the onset of clinical signs.
