Clinic significance
A prolonged thrombin time indicates fibrinogen abnormality (either qualitative or quantitative) or the presence of antithrombin activity (iatrogenic, e.g. heparin treatment, or pathological, e.g. fibrin breakdown products). This occurs in serious cases of hepatitis and cirrhosis of the liver, fibrinolytic conditions and diffuse intravascular coagulation.
