Clinical significance
A polypeptide found at nerve endings in the gut which stimulates gastrointestinal motility and secretion. High levels associated with Verner-Morrison syndrome (which is due to a neurendocrine tumor in the pancreas). Increased levels may also occur in patients with cutaneous mastocytoma and severe hepatic failure
