XANTU
Clinic significance
Xanthine is a purine base which is produced during nucleic acid metabolism. High serum levels are seen in xanthine oxidase deficiency and high levels in both serum and urine in Lesch-Nyhan syndrome (due to deficient hypoxanthine phosphoribosyltransferase). Urine levels are also elevated following tissue damage (e.g. myocardial ischemia).
