Clinical significance

Insulin-dependent diabetes (IDD) affects 0.3% of the population and 6% of relatives of a person with IDD. In some circumstances, it may be useful to know the probability of developing insulin dependence (related to a patient with IDD, latent diabetes, type 2 diabetes ...) The ZnT8 antibodies (directed against a 54kDa molecule which transports Zinc, specific for beta cells of the islets of Langerhans) are the target of 60-80% of sera with recent type I diabetes.
