Clinical significance
HER2 ECD is the cleaved circulating extracellular part of the HER2 growth factor receptor which can be over-expressed in some breast tumours. Over-expression of this receptor detected by means of immuno-chemistry involves treatment with trastuzumab (Herceptin), a monoclonal antibody targeting HER2. The serum HER2 concentration is useful for monitoring patients treated with trastuzumab.
